He started his career as a resident at the University Hospital in Giessen in 1978. In 1990 he became a full professor for cardiovascular surgery at the University in Bonn and vice chairman of the respective department. In 1989 and 1990 he spent two semesters at the Carolinas Heart Institute in Charlotte/NC as a research and clinical fellow. Since 1994,He is working at the University Hospital in Marburg as a full professor for cardiovascular surgery and director of the department. Between 2001 and 2011 he also held the position of the vice medical director and since 2006 the medical director of the University Hospital in Marburg. The main specialties within cardiovascular surgery are laser- and arrhythmia surgery, endovascular procedures including TAVI´s and endovascular reconstructions of the aortic arch and reconstructive surgery of the coronaries. As the chairman of the board of "Medical Network Hessen" he is an official representative of the State of Hessen in the field of clinical medicine and medical education.

Marco Picichè (MD, Ph.D.) graduated with a degree in medicine from the University of Florence in 1995 and completed his cardiac surgery residency at the Tor Vergata University of Rome in 2000, both summa cum laude. He has worked as an assistant at Saint Luc Hospital, Catholic University of Louvain, Brussels (1999–2001), as a clinic head/hospital assistant at the universities of Clermont-Ferrand (2003–2004) and Montpellier (2004–2007). He held regular teaching appointments at the university of Montpellier school of medicine, obtained certification by the French Board in cardiac surgery (Paris, 2007), earned his research master in surgical science (Paris, 2007). In Canada he authored a research project on ‘‘Noncoronary collateral circulation,’’ which was submitted to the annual research competition at Québec Heart & Lung Institute, Laval University, and received the competition’s highest grant. In September 2011 he received a doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) in therapeutic innovations from Paris-Sud University. He is the Editor in Chief of the book : « Dawn and evolution of cardiac procedures : research avenues in cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology » (Springer-Verlag publishing house). Currently he is a consultant cardiac surgeon in Italy.

Dr. Lerakis is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Emory University School of Medicine. He is also a Professor of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at Emory University. He is an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University. Dr. Lerakis is the Director of Interventional Echo and Cardiac MRI at Emory University Hospital and Emory Clinic. He received his M.D. degree from the Medical School of Athens (Greece) in 1988. He continued on doing clinical research in Nuclear Cardiology atMount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Subsequently, he did his Internal Medicine training at the Presbyterian Medical Center, University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia from 1991 to 1994 and completed his Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Brown University from 1994 to 1995. He went on to complete his Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas from 1995 to 1998 and then did one year of Echocardiography Fellowship at Emory University from 1998 to 1999. After his Echocardiography Fellowship, he has stayed on as Faculty in the Division of Cardiology practicing clinical and non-invasive cardiology.

Jose Antonio F. Ramires, MD, PhD has completed his PhD at the age of 28 years from University of São Paulo Medical School, Brasil and postdoctoral studies from the same University. He was the Scientific Director, Learn Director and General Director of the Instituto do Coração-INCOR (Heart Institute) of the University of São Paulo. Actually, he is Head Professor of Cardiology of the Instituto do Coração-INCOR and coordinator of medical graduate of the INCOR. Dr. Ramires was President of the São Paulo State Cardiology Society, Brazilian Society of Cardiology and Brazilian Heart Foundation (FUNCOR) and Vice-President of the InterAmerican Cardiology Society. During five years (2005-2010) was President of the Professors and Researchers Evaluation Committee of the University of São Paulo. Dr Avanzas graduated in Medicine at Universidad de Navarra, Pamplona, Spain. He completed Senior House Officer posts and registrar training in Cardiology at Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid, Spain. He took up a Spanish Heart Foundation Research Fellowship at Coronary Artery Research Unit, St. George´s Hospital Medical School in London and some months after that he was appointed as Associate Research Investigator of the Cardiovascular Biology Research Centre at St. George´s Hospital in London. He was also appointed as Consultant Cardiologist in Gregorio Marañón Hospital, Madrid, Spain and he also took up an Interventional Cardiology Fellowship in Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias, Oviedo, Spain. He is now Consultant in Invasive Cardiology in this Hospital. His major interests currently are in the field of coronary artery disease and inflammation, markers of myocardial ischemia and interventional cardiology, particularly antiplatelet therapies and percutaneous valve replacement. He is Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (working groups: Atherosclerosis, European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions and Acute Cardiovascular Care Association) and member of European Society of Atherosclerosis, International Society of Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy (Spanish Gobernor and WEB editor), Spanish Society of Cardiology and several regional cardiac societies. Dr Avanzas is author of more than 170 peer-reviewed articles and invited contributions (h-index=19) and Associate Editor of Revista Española de Cardiología (IF:3.3), Heart India and Bio Med Research International (IF: 2,7). He belongs to several scientific journal Editorial Boards (American Journal of Cardiology, World Journal of Translational Medicine, ISRN Cardiology, BioMed Research International, World Journal of Meta-Analysis, Advances in Medicine…). He is a frequent reviewer of more than 30 Cardiology journals and is also involved in teaching medical students and postgraduate teaching. Dr Avanzas is a frequent speaker at national and international meetings.
